Japanese Guitarist- Truly one of the sweetest albums ever made. Blending a multitude of influences the music manages to be simultaneously disarmingly simple and singularly complex. From swooping melodies to Metheny-esque guitar stabs, bossanova rhythms to bass-led grooves, it’s a patchwork quilt of sounds that mollifies like a comfortable blanket at one end and enlivens like oxygenated caffeine at the other.
The quality of the work is in the mix; to combine so many disparate parts and to make it sound composite is a rare art. Asano’s fusion is a layered masterpiece, drawing from influences such as Ryuchi Sakamoto, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk, the overall feel is more of a saunter in the countryside than a dash through the city streets.
